POWDER PUFF GAME AT LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL TO BENEFIT

 AFRICAN ORPHANS

Mount Tabor will donate proceeds to help adopt an orphan family in Africa

Mount Tabor High School will host a charity Powder Puff game as a fundraising event to help “adopt” an orphan family in the tribal community of Masoyi, South Africa.  

For the past six weeks, Mount Tabor has been raising money to sponsor the Mambane family, a child-headed household who currently reside in Masoyi in a house built of plywood and plastic.  This adoption will build the family a new cinderblock house, buy them monthly groceries for a year, and supply shoes and school uniforms for each child. It also provides the family with a vegetable garden “starter kit,” a wheel barrow filled with soil, fertilizer, vegetable seeds, garden tools and chicken wire.  A portion of the proceeds raised will also go to help fund educational and vocational programs in Masoyi for long-term help.  This Powder Puff game will be the culmination of the adoption, and pits two teams made up of Mount Tabor female students against each other in a game of flag football, with male students serving as cheerleaders. 

Mount Tabor is adopting this family through Heroes Helping Heroes, a program created by the partnership of two local not-for-profits, Gene Smart Compassion and Samaritan’s Feet.  The mission of Heroes Helping Heroes is to make an impact in practical ways to change the future for orphans and other vulnerable children by creating a model for a sustainable orphan community.  This model includes housing, food, education and employment opportunities.

Gene Smart Compassion was founded in 2008 by Dr. Floyd “Ski” Chilton, a leading biomedical researcher and author of several books including "Inflammation Nation" and "The Gene Smart Diet," and is based out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Gene Smart Compassion's mission is to empower orphans and other vulnerable children to reach their full potential and contribute to a strong future for Africa.   

Samaritan's Feet was founded by Emmanuel Ohonme and is based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Ohonme was born in Nigeria, and was given his first pair of shoes at the age of nine by a missionary from The United States. This gift eventually led to a basketball scholarship for Ohonme in the United States and years later was the purpose behind the creation of Samaritan's Feet. The mission of Samaritan's Feet is to put ten million pairs of shoes on ten million orphans in the next ten years.  In February of this year, K-Mart and Protege Footwear partnered to donate 1 million shoes to Samaritan's Feet.

JV Boys' Basketball Beats the Deamons and the Titans by Bryan Mihu

The boys’ junior varsity basketball team is now in the beginning of their season. The team has a record of 3-2 as of December 9 after playing against Mount Tabor, Reynolds, Reagan, and West Forsyth.

The team won against Mount Tabor, Reynolds, and West Forsyth and lost against Reagan and their second game to Mount Tabor. Freshman player Nate Goodman stated, “The season has been good so far, but we need to work on boxing players out.”

The team played against West Forsyth on December 9 and won with a score of 61-54. DeAnthony Miles scored 19 points during the game and said, “The season has been great so far, but the team needs to work a little on teamwork.”

The team is ready to improve their record in upcoming games so come out and support the boys’ junior varsity basketball team.

JV Girls Work to Improve Scoring by Morgan Reynolds

The North Forsyth Junior Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team is giving North Forsyth students a reason to have school spirit.  Captain Lajada Cross said, “We’re doing a lot better than last year.  We score more and more points every game.  All of us are taking more shots than we used to.” 

The captains of the junior varsity team include Lajada Cross, Alexis McCullough, and Lateria Rushing.  These talented Lady Vikings are also point guards.  Other team members include: Diamond Carpenter-Valentine, Cheyenne Martin, Dominique Richardson, and Sarae Walker.  The junior varsity girls’ basketball team played a hard game but was defeated by Mount Tabor High School on December 7^th. 

The JV girls’ basketball team is certainly working with Coach Smith to improve their game.

Indoor Track Team Makes Giant Strides by Heather Hall

            North Forsyth is doing extremely well in sports for the 2009-2010 season, and the indoor track team isn’t an exception.

The indoor track team practices Monday through Thursday with optional Friday practices from 4:00 P.M. to 5:15 P.M. If the team pushes themselves in practice, they will have a better chance to win their meets.

            Senior Charlie Drake stated, “We plan on going to states with a lot of hard work.”

            His fellow teammate, senior Kristen Campbell, declared, “In track you have to work hard to be the best; put in the work and you’re destined to be the best.”

            Kristen is right; as long as the team works hard they can accomplish whatever they set their hearts and minds to.

            They had the chance to put their dedication and training in effect on December 9. Starting at 4:45, North Forsyth had their first meet of the season at Mt. Tabor. The team ran against West Forsyth and Mt. Tabor. Each member of the North Forsyth team ran in at least one race.

             Anyone interested in catching a glimpse of the North Forsyth Indoor Track Team can catch them at Mt. Tabor on January 6 and 13 and February 2. Mt. Tabor is the only school with a regulation track, so if you ever want to watch the track team, head over to Mt. Tabor.

North's Swim Team Makes a Splash by LeeAnna Kincaid

            “Big team, big fun, and big wins. Thirty-four swimmers mean we can fill our line up with a few weaknesses. So far we have defeated three teams that beat us last year. That says a lot toward the hard work of the swimmers and coaching staff,” stated Coach Owens about the new and improved swim team.

            North’s male swimmers remain undefeated, while the women only suffered one loss. North kicked off their winning streak against Glenn with male 100 and female 100, while Glenn fell short with male and female at 60. The upset for female swim team members happened at North Davidson on November 23^rd with Davidson having a 109 and North with a 58. The most recent victory against Northeast Guilford on December 9^th was a huge accomplishment for both the female and male swimmers. Male swimmers soared over Northeast Guilford’s meager score of 21 with a whopping 122. Female swimmers also had an enormous defeat, with a 117 against an upsetting score of 48.

            The swimmers of North Forsyth are ready for a year of new starts including new swimmers, defeats, and an excellent coaching staff.

Rockin' Around the Basketball Court (girls varsity) by Emily Kincaid

            North Forsyth’s girls’ varsity basketball team is maintaining a thriving season thus far with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses as of December 8, 2009.

            The team won games against Atkins  (64-21), Forsyth Country Day (55-47), Reagan (60-47), and Glenn. They lost to Starmount (49-62), Mount Tabor (25-77), Reynolds (41-73), and once more to Mount Tabor (54-27). In the Mary Garber Tournament, the girls’ varsity basketball team tied for fifth place, despite being initially ranked twelfth out of thirteen teams.

            The leading scorer is senior Kayla Adams. She has 120 total points, averaging fifteen points per game. She has also made twenty steals this season. Junior Callie Yohn gained eighty-one rebounds, the most on the girls’ varsity team, as well as averaging twelve points per game and twenty-three blocks. Brianna Collins has also been instrumental in the team’s wins, earning the most playing time. “As the team says, ‘five hearts, five souls, one goal’- that’s been our mentality,” stated Callie Yohn. “We’re playing with a new confidence, and it’s really helped us succeed.”

            Coach Travis Atkins believes that the team’s success thus far is due to increased defense. “They’ve bought into the concept of team defense, and it’s helped us keep games closer.”

            The team has several games remaining in the months of January and February.

Vikings Score Over Spartans (boys varsity) by Justin Barnes

            The long awaited boys’ varsity basketball season is now underway. The team is off to an excellent start with a winning record.

            As of December 11, 2009, the team accomplished a record of 4-1. They won against Mt. Tabor High School twice, once on December 1^st with a score of 51-48 and December 8^th with a score of 48-46. The team also won against R.J. Reynolds High School on December 5^th with a score of 74-72 and West Forsyth on December 9^th with a score of 73-66. The only loss so far is against Ronald Reagan High School on December 4^th with a score of 66-84.

This record gives North Forsyth a 0.800 winning percent, with a 3-1 home record and a 1-0 away record. It also gives North Forsyth the 40^th ranking in the state. Moreover, the team has made a total of 312 points and allowed other teams to score 316 points.

This winning start gives the team motivation to keep winning so they can make the playoffs. As senior player Adam Muse stated, “The season is going good so far; we just have to stay focused and keep winning.” This enthusiasm can be the driving force to carry the team into the playoffs and maybe a championship.

            With a long season ahead of the team, they have a great chance of capturing wins. The team is working hard to improve every day in both basketball skills and team skills. Come support the Viking basketball team to make sure they kick the season off with an undescribable start. 

Wrestlers Pin Their Opponents by Moriah Gendy

            “Wrestlers shake hands and get ready to wrestle,” is how all North Forsyth wrestlers begin their matches. The team is off to a record of zero wins and three losses as of December 10, 2009, including South Stokes, Atkins, and West Forsyth. The team’s head coach, Coach Ellison, says, “We have a young team with only three seniors, but we have some potential college wrestlers.”

            With practices after school everyday from four to seven-thirty, they are usually more than a little tired. Their workouts usually include a lot of running and cardio. Sophomore Jarred Berry states, “Wrestling is a very demanding sport, but it makes you a better athlete.”

The wrestling team will have four tournaments over the course of this season. A tournament consists of regular matches against two to three teams. The team members go through the same procedure as a regular match. First, they must weigh in and be inspected for illegal hair length, oils or greasy substances, and long fingernails, as these could be used as an advantage in defeating their opponents. Then, at .

the end of the tournament, if they have succeeded in winning, they will be rewarded a medal.

            With at least thirteen more matches this year, the wrestling team has a lot to prove. With a lot of potential, hard work, and dedication, the North Forsyth wrestlers will definitely leave an impression this year.

Cross Country King

Congratulations to Jake for finishing 6th in the National Finals this past weekend in San Diego.

Jake finished with a time 15:32, just 24 seconds behind 1st place. 

Eastern Alamance High senior Jake Hurysz is the first cross country runner from his school to win the state title in the sport.  He won the North Carolina 3A cross country championship recently at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons a full 8 seconds ahead of the second place runner, finishing with a time of 15:49.  His topnotch run led the Eagles team to a third place overall title in the state, the team’s best finish in history.

A long list of accolades followed Jake’s footsteps this season leading up to the state title, including:  first place in the Adidas Wolfpack Invitational with the second fastest time ever on the course; first place in the Greensboro Invitational; third place finish in the tough Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival; fifth place in the grueling Great American Cross Country Race; and first place in the Mid State 3A Conference meet and Mid State 3A Regional meet.

Jake Hurysz

One week ago, Hurysz finished third in the Footlocker South Regional Cross Country meet featuring top runners from southern states.  He finished the race with a time of 14.46, besting several runners ranked in the top 20 in the country.  Jake’s time tied the fastest time ever for a North Carolina runner on the McAlpine course in Charlotte and qualified him for Footlocker’s national race in San Diego, California on December 12, all expenses paid.   A remarkable runner with a verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for a full scholarship offer next year, Jake has been running cross country for a mere two years.

Northeast High Receives Hugh Humphrey School Improvement Award

The prestigious award is given annually to the most improved high school in Guilford County

Greensboro, NC – Northeast Guilford High is the recipient of the fifth annual Hugh Humphrey School Improvement Award for its efforts to improve student achievement during the 2008-09 school year.

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation presented the award to Northeast at an event Wednesday. The $10,000 cash award will be used for professional development in support of a new co-teaching system that will allow the school to serve Exceptional Children and special student populations more effectively. Northeast will also receive the Hugh Humphrey cup to display on campus until next year’s winner is announced.

A selection committee representing the Community Foundation, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Guilford County Board of Education and Jacqueline Humphrey, the widow of the late Hubert B. Humphrey Jr., chose Northeast based on a comprehensive review of data. Specifically, Northeast was selected for its improvement in the graduation rate, student attendance, participation in Advanced Placement courses and the SAT, and excellent parent and community involvement.

The school’s attendance rate was up to 94.1 percent, and the graduation rate was up to 81 percent last year compared to 77 percent in 2007-08. The school also experienced growth in its ABC composite scores. Northeast moved from the classification of low performing school in 2007-08 to a priority school in 2008-09 with an increase in the ABC composite from 45 to 50.1.

“It’s gratifying to be chosen for this award,” said Anitra Walker, principal at Northeast. “It means to us that the hard work we’re doing is paying off and others are noticing our students’ achievements.”

Humphrey was a member of the board of trustees for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation from 1981 to 2003. Revered by fellow trustees and staff, Humphrey also served as legal counsel to the foundation. In November 2003, the trustees created the Hugh Humphrey School Improvement Award with the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro in memory of his dedication to education.

 End-of-Game Replays Approved in High School Basketball

INDIANAPOLIS, IN  - Replay equipment may be used in state high school basketball championships next year to determine the final outcome of games.

In its April 13-15 meeting in Indianapolis, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee voted to permit state high school associations to use a replay monitor to review field-goal attempts at the expiration of time in the fourth quarter or any overtime period, but only in games when the last-second attempt would affect the outcome of the game.

This addition to Rule 2-2-1 was one of two major rules changes and five major editorial revisions approved by the Basketball Rules Committee. All changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

In response to end-of-game situations in three state championships during the 2007-08 season (South Carolina, Michigan, Ohio), the committee decided to give state associations the opportunity to use technology, if available, to assist in making sure that the correct team is awarded the state championship. Replay or game officials will be able to determine if the attempt occurred before time expired (0:00 on clock), and whether the shot was a two-point or three-point attempt.

"Coaches, participants, spectators and media now hold game officials to a higher, almost impossible standard," said Mary Struckhoff, NFHS assistant director and liaison to the Basketball Rules Committee. "When available, technology should be used to assist game officials and administrators in making the correct call when the outcome of the game hangs in the balance and a team has no further opportunity to overcome a critical error. This change provides state associations that opportunity."

Although not directly linked to the replay change, the other rule change approved by the committee could enhance the reviews of end-of-game situations. Beginning with the 2009-10 season, if a red light behind the backboard or an LED light on the backboard is present, it is permitted to signal the expiration of time in the quarter/extra period. If no red light/LED light is present, the audible timer's signal will continue to signal the expiration of time. In the past, use of the red light/LED light was not permitted even in those facilities that had one.

"This change allows the technology to be used if it's available, and in those situations when replay officials are reviewing end-of-game attempts, the red light/LED light should be helpful," Struckhoff said. "All other end-of-period rules remain intact."

Two of the five editorial changes were approved in response to last year's major rule change in which all players moved up one lane space during a free-throw attempt, thereby leaving the two marked lane spaces closest to the end line vacant.

New language in Rule 9-1-3d states that a player leaves a marked lane space when he or she contacts any part of the court outside the marked lane space (3 feet by 3 feet). A clarification to Rule 9-1-3g indicates that a player occupying a marked lane space must have one foot positioned near the outer edge of the free-throw lane line with the other positioned anywhere within the designated 36-inch lane space.

Struckhoff said these changes were necessitated by players attempting to leave their positions too early to gain a rebound advantage.

The committee also adopted five points of emphasis for the upcoming season. The identified topics include traveling, closely guarded, three-seconds, block/charge and free-throw administration.

According to the 2007-08 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS, basketball is the most popular sport for girls with 449,450 participants in 17,564 schools. For boys, basketball is first in school sponsorship with 17,861 and second to football with 552,935 participants.
