Wrapping It Up before Christmas by Bryan Mihu
The season for fall sports has come to an end. These sports include varsity football, junior varsity football, varsity volleyball, junior varsity volleyball, varsity soccer, junior varsity soccer, tennis, and cross-country.
The varsity football team played their last game of the regular season on November 6 against Southwestern Randolph with a score of 33-22. They ended the regular season with a record of 5-6. Senior Charlie Drake said, “The season went well and if I could I would play next year.” The team had a playoff game against Hickory Ridge on November 13 but lost 25-6.
This year the junior varsity football team had an impressive record and was named conference champions.
The varsity soccer team played their last game in November. The team ended a great season with a season record of 12-8. Sophomore Angel Arellano stated, “Next year the season will be even better because only four seniors are leaving.
The varsity volleyball team ended the season with a record of 2-20 but is still happy to achieve some progress with wins against Carver. Senior Magan Hinson said, “The season was fun, and the team worked very well together.”
The junior varsity soccer team had an okay season with a record of 2-1 in the conference. Freshman player Paul Gendy replied, “The team had a lot of potential, and the season went fairly well.”
The junior varsity volleyball team ended their season in October. Ashlyn Tellechea, freshman, said, “The team did well and has a lot of room for improvement.”
Also, cross-country ended at the end of October. The season went fairly well and hopes to grow next year. Freshman runner Cynthia Barnes mentioned, “The season started off hard for me but as we went it got easier and more fun.”
In addition, the North Forsyth tennis team finished their last match in the fall. Senior Erica Munoz said, “I had a lot of fun playing tennis, and I thought the season went great.”
The fall season of sports ended but there are still winter sports to come. Stay tuned to read about other sports like basketball, wrestling, and swimming.
Dribbling Into December by Heather Hall
The falling leaves and cold weather not only bring hot chocolate and stuffy noses, but also the Lady Viking JV girls’ basketball team.
The team takes their first steps on the court on December 1 to square off against the Mt. Tabor Spartans. The team plays seven other games in December against teams such as Reagan, R.J. Reynolds, and West Forsyth. From December 21-23 the team will play in the Flow JV Basketball Tournament at Mt. Tabor High School.
With practices everyday after school, the team is getting to practice several new skills to help them prepare for the games they will face. If the team can learn how to work as a whole and take the skills they learned in practice onto the court, then the JV Viking ladies should come up with a winning season.
Don Smith coaches the team. Even though last year wasn’t the best for the team, the 2009 season is looking bright.
Starting Off With a Bang by Heather Hall
The 2009 indoor track season is sure to start off with a bang. The team is going strong this year and practicing everyday to prepare for their upcoming track meets.
There are several fresh faces on the team this year that include Sebastian Gomez, Hannah Thornton, and Kelsie Thornton. Seniors on the team this year include Darius Baker, Justin Barnes, Kristen Campbell, Charlie Drake, and Dewault Rice.
When asked what she thought about the upcoming season and track in general, freshman Hannah Thornton stated, “Track has been a great experience, and I have met a lot of new people. It has been fun, but at the same time we have to take it seriously. I think that this season will be a good one.”
Hannah’s fellow teammate, junior Sebastian Gomez, declared, ”I expect this season to be good.”
It is looking to be a good season for the 2009 North Forsyth indoor track team. The team practices Monday through Friday from four o’clock to five thirty. During track practices you can see the team running and doing cardio workouts such as jumping jacks and pushups.
The team is hoping that all of their difficult practices will pay off in the end, and they will pull through with a winning season.
Dribbling to a Win by J. Barnes
Another season of varsity basketball is underway. The team is coached by Sean Vestal. The team is led by seniors CJ Campbell, Montreay Durant, Gerry Hairston, Allen Hauser, Tahji Kaigler, Adam Muse, and Wesley Patterson.
The team also consists of juniors Trent Coles, Kenny Mickens, Jamel Summers, and Marvin Young, and sophomores Rayshawn Speas and Edward Valentine.
The team practices every day from six to eight P.M. The team has upcoming matches against Mount Tabor on December 1st and 8th, Reagan High School on the 4th and 11th, R.J. Reynolds on the 5th, and West Forsyth on the 9th and 15th.
Coach Vestal stated, “I am very excited about the upcoming season; we have a great group of guys that work hard and like being around each other and look forward to playing and representing our school well.”
The team has a chance of making playoffs this year, if they work hard. Come out and support the team as they try to start the season off with a winning record.
Bouncing Back by Heather Hall
It’s fall, and you know what that means. North Forsyth’s JV boys’ basketball team is back on the court. The boys are gearing up for the long anticipated 2009 season.
The team, coached by Jason Smith, is running suicides till their legs feel like jelly to prepare for their upcoming games. Their first game is on December 1 against the Mt. Tabor Spartans, followed by games against the Reagan Raiders on the 4th and the R.J. Reynolds Demons on the 5th.
Markeen Carmichael stated, “I can’t wait for the season to start. I think it will be a very good season.”
Markeen’s fellow teammate Tyvon Johnson declared, “Always go hard and give it all your heart all four quarters. Never give up.”
Tyvon is right, if the team gives it all they have, then they will surely pull out wins. Expectations for the team this year are very high. With all the practices and workouts the team is doing, there is bound to be a successful JV boys’ basketball record.
Vikings Make a Splash by M. Gendy
“Swim team is back in season, and we are ready for another great year,” according to swimmer Chris Ehren. After winning the Sportsmanship Award last year, they are hoping for the same achievement this year.
Coach Paul Trivitte says, “We are really excited about this year; we have 30-40 swim team members, and we’re looking forward to having a great year.”
With five practices a week, afternoons on Monday and Wednesday, and morning practices on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, they are definitely getting down to business.
The seniors on swim team this year are Logan Brendle, Jonathon Mihu, Lauren Muse, Hannah Saunders, Mickey Murphy, Mehgan Spruill, and Brenda Velasquez. As the seniors are finishing up their last year of swim team, the freshmen are starting up and enjoying every minute of it. “It is a lot of fun; we have a lot of practices and Coach Trivitte is really good. He even gets in the water to help us,” replies freshman Victoria Miller.
This year some swim team members are hoping to break past records and even possibly make it to state competition. Needless to say, North Forsyth can expect a lot from the swim team this season.

Slam Dunk Into Their Season by E. Kincaid
With one winning game under their belts, the varsity girls’ basketball team is working hard to improve from last year’s 4-19 season.
Coach Travis Atkins, prior to the start of the season, feels positive about the varsity girls’ upcoming games, stating, “I’m very optimistic about the way we’ve improved our defense.”
During their first game against Atkins High School on November 17, the varsity girls encountered an early lead, ending the first quarter with a score of 20-4. With the efforts of Callie Yohn, who scored 16 points; Kayla Adams, who scored 11 points; and Brittany Allen, who scored 10 points; the team finished the game with a score of 64-21. Nearly every team member who played contributed to the score.
The team has six seniors: Kayla Adams, Brittany Allen, Brianna Collins, Sheniquia Jacobs, Paula Moore, and Chelsea Oakes. Rather than appointing captains, Coach Atkins says he relies on his seniors for leadership and guidance. “Our efforts in games start with our seniors. We rely on them to provide guidance for our younger players.”
Fueled by a winning first game, the girls’ varsity basketball team is looking forward to the season ahead.
