North Forsyth's Drumline Visits The Pigskin Patio
Reports From North Forsyth's Norlander
Varsity Volleyball by Heather Hall
The end of October brings the end of North Forsyth’s Varisty Volleyball season. Even if the team didn’t end with a smashing record, 2-20, they are still happy with the progress they achieved.
Junior Jennifer Spaugh stated, “This season was a lot of fun even though we don’t have the record we wanted, but a lot of new friends were made.”
The team played games against East Forsyth, Reynolds, West Forsyth, Carver, Asheboro, Southern Guilford, Glenn, Northeast Guilford, Ledford, and Southwest Randolph in the 2009 season. Even though the team only won two of these games against Carver, they learned to work together as a whole so they could get more points on the scoreboard.
For several on the team, it is their last season. The senior girls on the team worked very hard to make their last season their best one. Seniors that were on the 2009 team were Magan Hinson, Ebony Miles, Ashley Sparks, and Shanika Watson
Head coach Katrina Davis stated, “This was THE most enjoyable and rewarding season I have experienced while coaching at North Forsyth. The young ladies that comprised the program were special student athletes. While we didn’t put many “w’s” in the win column, we were all winners in the display of excellent character, teamship, and consideration. We are a young and talented team. Our squad continues to develop skill and knowledge of the game. I am saddened by the season ending but I am excited about and look forward to the 2010 season. It was a true blessing to be a part of this great group of young ladies and their supportive parents.”
The 2009 varsity volleyball season was extremely challenging for the girls on the team, but they managed to pull together and make it through the season.
V Football- Justin Barnes
The football season is well underway. The football team is making progress from last month. With only a few games left in the season, the team is hopeful.
As of October 19, 2009, the team’s record is 4-4. The team won against Reagan, Atkins, Ledford, and Asheboro and lost against Carver, Mount Tabor, West Forsyth, and East Forsyth. This is an improvement from last month when the team had a losing record. Now the team is tied for first place in the conference with a record of 2-0 against Ledford and Asheboro. Moreover, North also had a big win against Asheboro on homecoming with a stunning 21-13 victory.
Senior Darius Baker stated about the season thus far, “We had a rocky start, but the team is pulling it together now, and we are looking pretty good.” Senior S.Q. Bush also stated, “Everything is coming together nicely. We are looking forward to becoming conference champions and making a good run in the playoffs.”
North has one more home game on the 30th against Northeast Guilford. In addition, the team wraps up the regular season on November 6th at Southwestern Randolph.
The team is looking forward to the rest of the season with their perfect conference record thus far. The team is in shape to make it into the playoffs this year. As Darius said, “We hope we can make it into the playoffs. Right now we are tied for 1st in conference and with a couple more wins we can lock a place in the playoffs.”
The conference move has given North a new hope for a shot at a championship. Come out and support your Vikings as they try to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
Darron Daniels- V Soccer
Possessing a record of 8-7-2 as of October 16, the North Forsyth Varsity Soccer Team continues to display a hard work ethic in all of their games. This month, the team defeated Southwest Randolph (1-0) and Ledford (4-0). Asheboro gave the team the first loss of the month, defeating the soccer team 1-3.
Coach Timmins continues to push the team forward as well. He provides the mind-set of, “Always try your best and work together. Never give up,” to his team. With an attitude such as that, it is no wonder that the varsity soccer team plays with such skill and determination.
The team’s typical workout consists of a lot of running. In fact, the team runs a couple of laps around the Sara Lee Field as a part of their workout. After laps, the team stretches in order to loosen muscles. Stretching increases the players’ flexibility on the field and improves the range of motion of their joints as well.
The offensive and defensive players work in separate units to hone their skills. The goalies do the same. During the workouts, the coach offers advice and instructs the team.
Junior Hector Perales, who is a keeper on the varsity team, declares, “I think that the team is doing pretty good. We may have a shot at the championship.”
If the soccer team continues to work and practice in the vigorous manner that has gotten them to this point, then North Forsyth may be adding a new trophy to one of its shelves.
Sara Rasnick-Cross Country
Running for miles would make anyone upset, but not North Forsyth’s cross country team.
The seniors on the team are Justin Barnes and Dewalt Rice. The juniors are Sebastian Gomez, MacKenzie James, Cody Petree, Kelsie Thornton, and Matthew Tuttle. Other team members include Cynthia Barnes, Tyler Christian, David Kessel, Amanda Szyjka, and Hannah Thornton. The coach of the cross country team is Allen Rice.
This season they ran against Asheboro, Ledford, Northest Guilford, Southern Guilford, and Southwestern Randolph.
The cross country team practices Monday through Friday from four until five-thirty. They can often be caught running around the school during the evenings, especially through the nature trail.
The team has made great strides this season towards excellence. While they have not done a miraculous job winning meets, they have bonded over the time period. Next year they plan to do better.
