Girls Tennis by Sara Rasnick
Serena Williams might not be doing so well with her tennis career, but North Forsyth’s tennis team is. Coach Q. Owens commands the tennis team.
The team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they have home games on Mondays and away games on Wednesdays. They are currently working hard on focusing and self-confidence.
When asked what Coach Q. thinks the team needs to work on he said, “The team needs to work on athleticism, strength, footwork, ball striking, development of topspin, strategy, service pace, service consistency, volleying, and doubles strategies.”
The team played Asheboro, Northeast Guilford, and Ledford but they lost 0-9. They battled against Southern Guilford and lost 4-5. They have played against Southwest Guilford and unfortunately lost 3-6.
The freshmen on the team are Josie Edwards and Katia Jenkins. The sophomores are made up of Caroline Cody, Tina Orner, Fabiola Perez, Angelique Robinson, Kala Spencer, and Karina Zaragoza. The seniors include Jenna Cook, Yesenia Evaristo, Erica Munoz, Yazmin Nieves, Brenda Velasquez, and Adriana Zaragoza.
Angelique Robinson predicted that the tennis team will win most of their games and that they deserve some publicity for a change.
When asked what the team was like Angelique said, “We’re awesome; we play great, and we look good while doing it!”
The next Monday that comes along everyone should definitely come out and support North’s tennis team.

Varsity Soccer by Heather Hall
Most students at North Forsyth wouldn’t like running around for hours at a time. North Forsyth’s varsity soccer team does it every day. They are some of the hardest trained athletes at North Forsyth High School.
The team pushes themselves to do their best, not only during games, but also during their rough practices. During practice, the team does several drills so they will be prepared for the game ahead of them.
North Forsyth students and parents can catch their varsity soccer games at either 6:00 P.M. or 7:00 P.M. The team has upcoming games against Simon Atkins High School, R. J. Reynolds High School, Asheboro High School, and Southern Guilford High School. The team has a record of four wins against: Reagan, Glenn, Rockingham County, and Simon Atkins. The team has also suffered three losses against West Forsyth, East Forsyth, and Reynolds.
The players on the team this year are all very talented. They work as a team to help each other get better, and they work hard as individuals to improve on their personal skills. Coach John Timmons and assistant coaches Victor Lopez and Jeff Moore help the team improve on these skills. Seniors on the 2009 team are Manuel Matinez and Nestor Pacheco.
The team has many different positions. Keepers on the team are Hector Perales and Joseph Sanzchez. There are six different defenders this year: Darwin Arreaza, Tit Ha, Manuel Martinez, Delfino Olivera, Jonathan Ramirez, and Gonzalo Rojo. Midfielders are Angel Arellano, Chris Ehren, Candido Garcia, Christian Garcia Ramos, Jesus Huerta, Nestor Pacheco, and Jaime Serrano. There are two forwards on the 2009 team: Edgar Gomez Estrada and Samuel Jacobo.
Junior Hector Perales stated, “The team is strong; we’re doing good and need to keep together. We’re going to do really good this year.”
Hector is right. The team has done very well in the 2009 season. If the varsity team keeps it up, there will be an outstanding varsity soccer record.
Cross Country by Heather Hall
How would you like to run miles outside every single day? It would be extremely challenging, but North Forsyth’s cross country team can handle it.
The team practices everyday with the exception of Friday. Students may catch them running on the track or around on the trails. With practices everyday from 4:00 P.M. to about 5:00 P.M., the team members are bound to get in good physical shape. The team runs a 3.18-mile course in the woods and on the track. North Forsyth’s average time is twenty-four to twenty-five minutes.
The seniors on the team this year are Justin Barnes and Dewalt Rice. The team has many new members this year, which include Tyler Christian, Sebastian Gomez, Hannah Thornton, and Kelsie Thornton. Other team members are Cynthia Barnes, McKenzie James, David Kessel, Cody Petree, Amanda Szyjka, and Matthew Tuttle.
Junior Kelsie Thornton stated, “Cross country is challenging but worth it because you get yourself in shape.”
Kelsie’s teammate, junior Sebastian Gomez, declared, “When the cramps come, you just have to suck it in and keep going.”
The cross country team had their first conference meet on September 15, 2009 against Northeast Guilford High School. Sadly, the team suffered a loss. The team also has upcoming meets against Southwestern Randolph High School and Southern Guilford High School. The team is working hard to improve in hopes of winning these next few meets.
North Forsyth’s cross-country team is looking forward to a good 2009 season. The team members have been practicing very hard so they can be successful this year.
