Northwest Guilford Student/Athlete Fights Juvenile Diabetes Both On and Off The Field
Taylor Mowery, starting pitcher for the Northwest Guilford Girl's Softball Team, is known as an exceptional athlete, advocate for Juvenile Diabetes, and endearing individual.
Diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in 2004 (at the age of 12), Taylor strives to achieve all that she can...both on and off the athletic field. She is passionate about finding a cure for Juvenile Diabetes, and attempts to educate others about the daily struggles of living with Type I Diabetes.
Her struggle with diabetes first began with a routine sports physical, while she was only in the 7th grade and in the middle of basketball season. Now, she wears an insulin pump to give herself a continuous infusion of insulin, and needs to check her own blood sugar 10+ times per day.
Taylor is currently very involved with the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), has met with several legislators on the state/national levels to advocate for a cure, and is part of the "Promise to Remember Me" campaign (encouraging federal funding for stem cell research, health plan coverage for Continuous Glucose Monitors, and managing diabetes while in school).
Additionally, Taylor's recent "Walk to Cure Diabetes" team, named 'Taylor's Turbos', raised over $60,000 for research towards finding a cure for Juvenile Diabetes.
Taylor's most recent accomplishment was in being named to the JDRF "Children's Congress". She was selected as one of only 150 students on an international level (out of thousands) to represent the organization in Washington, D.C. in June 2009. Members of the Children's Congress will rally to urge politicians in Washington, D.C. to offer more funding for Juvenile Diabetes research and in finding a cure.
Next on the agenda?...looking forward to research breakthrough...an artificial pancreas.
And, of course, attending the Northwest Guilford Prom, which she's very excited about!
In the meantime, Taylor will continue to focus on living life to its fullest, through being both an exceptional athlete and outstanding advocate for Juvenile Diabetes.
She is an inspiration to so many, for so many reasons, and will hopefully continue to be an inspiration for many years to come.
