“First Generation Green Festival”
April 20th – 22nd
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – In support of Winston-Salem State University’s sustainability initiatives, the Office of Marketing and Communications will launch the “First Annual Generation Green Festival,” a three-day celebration beginning April 20 and culminating on Earth Day, April 22.
The festival is free and open to the public. Generation Green events will include “think green” workshops on environmental literacy and a forum on “The Green House Effect”; a “Trash-2-Treasures” art contest featuring works by Carver High School students; a “Snack and a Movie” environmental film festival; a “Spring Into Green” fashion show (sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina); and a “Go Green” free raffle (sponsored by Whole Foods, Body & Soul, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Village Tavern, Star Bucks and other businesses in the Triad).
The Carver High School students who created the “Trash-2-Treasures art are participants in the school’s Stride Program, a drop-out prevention initiative aimed at redirecting qualifying youth, through awareness exercises, tutoring and hands-on experiences, to develop positive behaviors that will be incentives to graduating and to healthy lifelong pursuits.

The film will be followed by a tree planting ceremony.
“We are extremely proud to be the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to celebrate Earth Day. Increasing the environmental literacy of our students, faculty and staff will ensure that the needs of future generations are not compromised,” said Judy Willis, project
manager for the festival.
Bridget Armstrong, student coordinator and campus liaison added, “The Generation Green Festival will encourage students to become better stewards of the environment and take
more pride in the campus community.”
