Ledford Indoor Percussion Ensemble Has a "Beat" All Its Own
The Ledford High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble (LIPE), under the direction of Mr. Lenny Keesee and sponsored by the Ledford Band Boosters, is comprised of over 45 students in both JV and Varsity groups. It is an organization that not only exemplifies extreme talent, but also exudes an aura all its own.
The LIPE, while similar in structure to a marching band, uses only percussion and electronic instruments within performances, and performs inside gymnasiums rather than fields, hence the "indoor percussion" phrase. The group is completely extra-curricular, and students spend numerous hours outside of school and on weekends to perfect their productions.
This season marks the 6th competitive year of the LIPE, founded in 2004. The group has been a championship finalist at the Atlantic Indoor Percussion Championship (www.atlanticindoor.org) every year since its inception, and also earned silver medalist honors at the same competition both in 2005 & 2008.
This year's theme for the Varsity LIPE is "The Five Stages of Grief", and while the production may seem a little "dark" to some, it is a performance that draws out emotion in its audience.
On Saturday, April 4th, both the JV and Varsity LIPE ensembles will perform in the Ledford High School gym, giving full performances, in connection with the annual "Fish Fry" fundraiser, held by the Ledford Band Boosters. The fundraiser will take place at Ledford High School. The JV ensemble will perform at 5:00 PM, and the Varsity ensemble at 6:00 PM.
(Also at the fundraiser, the Concert Band will perform at 7:00 PM, and the Wind Ensemble at 7:30 PM)

In mid-April, the Varsity ensemble will travel to Dayton, OH for the 2009 WGI "Sports of the Arts" Indoor Percussion World Championships. This contest will feature over 180 percussion ensembles from across the globe, and it's the first time that Ledford will be making the trip to Dayton for the World Championships.
